The story of this painting is developing from the local newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija. Our sailor emerges from the newspaper and serenades the girl he loves. She stands on a balcony of a palace and listens to him. The light from a lighthouse is shining upon the girl like a reflector. All the items coming out of the newspaper represent life and desires. We can notice a coffee cup in which coffee is mixed with letters from the newspaper. This symbolizes an invitation to talk. Some of the strings on the sailor’s guitar are broken but our sailor keeps on serenading. He is persistent in his attempt to win the girl with music. From the central part of the painting, there is another painting emerging. You can see a piano there, music notation and laundry. They all serve as a representation of a possible future these two could have together.
